160,000 People on the Side of a Mountain

My friend Amy called me a few weeks ago and told me her boyfriend Mark had two extra tickets to the night race at Bristol. For some reason, it took me longer than two seconds to think it over and decide that yes, I would indeed like to purchase those tickets. It is harder to get tickets for this race than damn near any other race in the country. It features 43 cars that normally race on ovals well over a mile long, piled onto a track that's only 1/2 of a mile. It makes for a fantastic way to spend a Saturday night. My old friend Jason Bronis(http://roadreporter.blogspot.com) took some time out of his ridiculously busy schedule to head north. We left Charlotte Saturday morning and arrived in Bristol at 2:00.
Mark and Amy (pictured above) hadn't arrived yet so we proceeded to find a parking space and drink beer for several hours. The Lady made us some cookies and peanut butter sandwiches, so we ate those and chatted with some nice guys from Ohio. Looking back on it, we really did drink a ton of beer. I stuck with High Life Light, and Jason stayed loyal to his anti-Kurt Busch Bud Select.
We finally went into the track an hour before the race started to get situated and just look around at the most popular track in NASCAR. It's weird seeing that many people in such a small place. We were 48 rows up at the entrance to Turn 1 and we could see everything from there. It was LOUD!!! Before the race there was a big America tribute complete with Lee Greenwood. The dude pictured above is one of the things I love about NASCAR. He was reflecting whilst Lee Greenwood blessed the United States of America.
Here's a shot of some drunk folks about halfway through the race. Jason started to shut it town shortly after the race started so he could drive home, though. Amy smuggled some tequila into our section that somehow didn't eat through the water bottles she had stowed away.
Scott G was also there. He was shooting for someone at the race. Not sure who. I'll find out next week when we play golf.
